In 2013, Vlisco celebrated Women’s Month for the very first time. A yearly tribute and award to West and Central Africa’s most inspirational and successful women and those who dream of success. The winners were elected by the public and were revealed during festive Award nights in March 2013.
It was a huge success! We received more than 160.000 votes from as many as 50 countries. This great enthusiasm resulted in seven successful and inspirational Vlisco Ambassadors.
In August 2013, the Award winners of Congo, Benin, Ghana, Niger, Nigeria, Ivory Coast and Togo arrived in the Netherlands for a 3-day visit. This inspirational trip, full of cultural and educational activities, was part of the first prize. The ladies, also known as our Brand Ambassadors 2013, provided the knowledge and experiences they gained during their visit to The Netherlands to women in their homeland and abroad.
Of course, we will take you through this trip with amazing photo’s (by Seth Carnill) and a video!
The first stop of these powerful ladies, who all looked stunning in their Vlisco outfits, was the world renowned Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam. There they visited the very impressive Rijksmuseum library to discover 18th century textile books and the museum’s core collection to see the very impressive The Night Watch. In the afternoon the group left to the Workshop Me Marketing organized by WOMEN Inc., an independent platform that challenges women to empower themselves. There, Jannet Vaessen (General Director WOMEN Inc.) spoke about how to present yourself and how to make yourself visible in a more productive way. The day ended with a late night dinner at Eye Bar Restaurant at the IJ in Amsterdam.
The second day started with a visit to Castle Muiderslot. This imposing castle is established in 1285 and is the most beautiful and best kept medieval castle in the Netherlands. After a two-hour visit, the ladies traveled to Helmond where the Vlisco Factory is located. There they were given a guided tour by Vlisco Employee, Mr. Joop Martens, who has a great knowledge about Vlisco’s products and remarkable history. All the ladies were extremely impressed with the process of the emergence and creation of the original Vlisco fabrics – the Wax, Super-wax and Java. The day ended with a dinner at Ons Loes, also located in Helmond.
The last day started with a nice and relaxing boat trip on the Amsterdam canals. The day continued with a photoshoot at World Heritage Kinderdijk where Dutch 18th century windmills are located. Feeling a bit nostalgic? You will absolutely enjoy the video of the complete trip.
